ThePebble dash is a form of rendering where pea shingle or stone chippings are thrown onto sand and cement base. Roughcast is crushed stone mixed with cement and applied to walls. Arts & Crafts or Tudorbethan style homes used pebble dashing as a design feature. External walls were red brick at the lower end and pebble dashed above. The wall surface was often left unpainted. Pebble dashing obtained a poor image after it was over used in post war housing. Due to the lack of skilled bricklayers after the Second World War pebble dashing was bought back as a way of covering up poor brickwork, especially on council estates.
