The
Arts
& Crafts period saw a return of oak panelling. This was often
seen in hallways and landings which were designed to be seen as a central
living space. Oak panelling offered a grand but low maintenance material
that withstood the daily dirt and wear and tear often found in busy
entrances. The panelling would be made from vertical oak boards surrounded
by a frame and topped with a plate rail. The panels covered the lower
half of the wall or could be found to cover the two thirds of the wall.
This style of wall covering continued to be popular in the traditional
style house up to the late 1930's.
