John
Heartfield was a German artist that used photomontage as a political
weapon to ridicule the Nazi Government. Hitler recognised that images
had the power to both maintain and change society and attempted to take
control of the German Art world, banning freethinking artist and encouraging
art that glorified his regime. Rebellious artist like Heartfield were
not perturbed and groups such as the Dada movement used art to illustrate
the negative aspects of Nazi power. John Heartfield was one of the first
artists to use photomontage for political reasons. He believed art could
be used as a way of questioning the status quo. As Heartfield pointed
out: "New political problems demanded new means of propaganda.
For this task photography possesses the greatest power of persuasion."
